Training Materials for Community- and/or Faith-Based Outreach Organizations

These material have been produced under a Susan Harwood Targeted Topic Training grant from the Department of Labor (DOL) through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in a partnership between the Medical College of WI (MCW) and the Wisconsin Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (WisCOSH).

These materials are intended to facilitate the training of workers in community- and/or faith-based outreach organizations. Since many of these organizations may have a mix of paid and unpaid (volunteer) workers it is important that all the workers be aware of the possible hazards they may face when doing this valuable work so that they are not at risk of injury, illness or death, do not put anyone else at risk and are better able to serve the people and communities they live and work in.

We encourage you to train all of your workers on workplace hazards. It is the fiscally and ethically correct thing to do. It is important in that your paid workers have Worker's Compensation rights for any injuries, illnesses or deaths sustained on the job. Your unpaid workers do not have Worker's Compensation rights but are able to sue you in court for any workplace injuries, illnesses or deaths that arise as well as for other recoverable damages as may apply. This is not meant to scare you but rather to encourage you to protect your organization and your workers and help you to continue to provide the valued and necessary services you provide to your community.

You will find materials here that are invaluable in identifying workplace hazards, setting up a training for the worker(s) and the materials that can be used in the trainings. We encourage you to read the materials thoroughly as many different types of hazards exist. You may not need all of the materials for your workplace or all work situations, but familiarity with them will enable you to better answer any questions your workers may have. The materials are divided into two groups :

  1. Trainer's Materials
