Workers' Memorial Day, April 28th, is an annual event to commemorate those workers killed on the job or who die from workplace exposures and/or illness. The Milwaukee area comemmoration is co-sponsored by WisCOSH, the WI State AFL-CIO, and the Milwaukee Area Labor Council as a reminder of the continuing strugle for safe and healthy jobs. Traditionally, the names of the deceased have been read to pay homage. However, due to a law passed in 1993, called "The Confidential Nature of BLS Records," the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the Department of Labor is not allowed to release of the names of workers who do not receive death benifits, nor do they include the names of persons that die from occupational disease. If you have the name and information of someone who died on the job or from a work related exposure or illness please contact WisCOSH with the information.
If you have lost a loved one to occupational illness, workplace exposure or a death in the workplace and are looking for some help figuring out what to do and who to contact the United Support and Memorial for Workplace Fatalities may be of help. This web site is run by a woman, and her family, who lost her brother to a workplace fatality. They provide support, awareness, tributes, memorials, article, self-help, workers comp. laws, wrongful death attorneys and safety resources. And most of all they care! They listen!
At a workers' memorial that commemorates the dead there should be no 'John Does'!! Join WisCOSH in working for that day when we loose no more loved ones to unsafe workplaces, and everyone who goes to work comes back home again.
